IMPORTANCE OF DIAGNOSIS
A very interesting story about what
a big difference diagnosis can make.
A client of mine has been coming to see
me in Hawaii
for about 16 years (the family lives in So. Calif.
and owns a condo in HI) . He has always told me one of his adopted daughters
is autistic but never told me the details.
I recently heard the whole story from his wife.
The parents realized there was some developmental
difficulties going on with their 18 month old daughter. They took her to a number
of doctors. The first one said it was Turret’s
syndrome; they had been warned beforehand the doctor was going to say this—rightfully so.
The second appt. was with a highly touted doctor from UCLA; took 6 mo. to get an appointment. When she arrived at the appt. the doctor told her she had to give a speech that day and didn’t have
much time. She was diagnosed with Mental
Retardation by this doctor.
Finally
she was referred by two other parties to the same doctor. This doctor said her daughter would grow up with learning disabilities but would eventually go to high school. And
that is what happened. She is now 16 years old, some learning disabilities and
is in high school. She loves Yoga.
